Our Dojo is a small, private dojo which teaches Okinawan Shorin-ryu Matsumura Seito Karate and Kobudo. It is the Tennessee branch dojo (Shibu dojo) of the Shorin-ryu Matsumra Seito Suiken Bugei Kai founded by Shihan Ricky Rose, student of Hohan Soken and Kosei Nishihira, and the dojo instructor is Frank Cantrell.
Training consists of stretching and conditioning, basic techniques, partner drills, kata, tuite, kumite, and kobudo (weapons training). The emphasis is on conditioning the body while developing strong technique and teaching strategy as well as building confidence and character in the student. " Sensei Cantrell teaches in a traditional manner and prefers to keep the number of students small in order to pass on the art on a personal level to each student as it has been done for centuries in Okinawa.
Mr. Cantrell started martial arts training in 1972 studying MuDuckKwan and then TangSooDo (Korean arts) while in the U.S.A.F. In 1978 started training in Okinawa with Ricky Rose. We transitioned from KenShinKan to Matsumura Seito under Sensei Soken.
